USDS + Lesbians Who Tech + Allies
We are excited and proud to be a part of the 2019 Lesbians Who Tech + Allies New York Leadership Summit, which brings together mid-level and executive non-binary, LGBTQ women and our allies. Members of our team will be attending the Summit as speakers, recruiters, and allies — they can’t wait to hear about all of the work you are doing and connect at the Summit!

The U.S. Digital Service is a tech startup at The White House. We were founded in 2014 by the President to fix Healthcare.gov when it went down. Today we continue our non-partisan mission by bringing government services to all Americans through design and technology.
We’re ~180 people from tech communities across the United States. At 60% women in leadership and 50% female overall, diversity is important to us, and we’re still working to do better. Our work impacts Veterans, military service members, immigrants, refugees, farmers, small business owners, students, Medicare patients, and many more. We build better products when our team reflects all of America. 💪🏽🖥🏳️🌈

Clare Bayley (she/her), Director of Product, USDS / HQ
A year and a half ago I was wandering the job fair at LWT SF, despondent and disaffected with my big-tech-company job. I came upon a booth for this little thing called the U.S. Digital Service. They caught my eye with their modest signage and claims of changing the world — claims actually backed up by data, not just startup sales pitches. I walked away from that booth feeling warm and energized and inspired, which hadn’t happened to me with a work thing in a long time.
Now I’m proud to be back at LWT on the other side of that table, representing USDS as the Director of Product. I spend my time supporting the Product community at USDS (~45 people right now), figuring out how best to inoculate government with a Product mindset, and searching for great new talent to keep up the fight.
Leah Bannon (she/her), Product Manager, Digital Service at VA
I co-lead the VA.gov platform, which supports a dozen teams building and redesigning services for Veterans on VA.gov. This work is exciting to me, because this feels like the next big thing that the civic tech movement is trying to figure out. Once you’ve launched a major product, designed with users — not just for them — how do you grow and scale? How do you continue improving on the quality and user experience of the overall product — while constantly on-boarding new teams with varying experience building with users in an agile, iterative environment? And all while respecting the government’s unique responsibilities and laws?
VA.gov supports over 800,000 users PER WEEK, and our products can save them weeks or months waiting for a benefit or service. If you’re looking for a real challenge in site reliability or user-centered, agile development — let’s chat!
